Red Oak – All colors work well on Red Oak. Lighter colors such as Natural, Honey Glow and Sundance are enhanced by Candlelight Cabinetry’s use of select Red Oak. Wild grain and off -color (greenish, gray and dark colors) will be culled out. Minimum stave width of 2 inches. Doors are assembled with some consideration for grain flow and uniformity. *Available in Rustic as well.

Red Birch – Red Birch is especially interesting when done in a Natural finish. This allows for the iridescent appearance of the open grain patterns. When finished in Embers, Expresso and Burnished, these open grains will absorb the darker stain tones taking on a blotchy appearance, which is considered desirable by some and undesirable by others. Our select Red Birch comes from the golden -brown heartwood of the Birch tree. Grayish and off – color boards will be culled out. Minimum stave width of 2 inches. Doors are assembled with some consideration for grain flow and uniformity.

Cherry – Lighter finishes such as Natural, Honey Glow and Sundance will allow character marks (including brown pitch flecks, small gum pockets and pin knots) to show through the finish. Pin knots the size of a pencil eraser can be expected. Many consumers do not realize the extreme variations of color tones inherent in cherry wood. This effect is considered desirable by some and undesirable by others. Select Cherry will have character marks and up to 3% sapwood. Sapwood, large and dark mineral marks will be culled out. Wild grains and grains not indicative of cherry will also be culled out. Minimum stave width of 2 inches. Doors are assembled with some consideration for grain flow and uniformity. *Available in Rustic as well.

Maple – Light stains work well on Maple. Darker stains such as Burnished, Embers, Expresso, when applied to Maple can take on a blotchy appearance. Select Maple can also possess rift marks which could be interpreted as defects in the staining process; however, they are just part of the natural beauty of Maple wood. Rift marks show up in all finishes; however, they are most evident in darker stains. Select Maple will also contain dark brown character marks, which are most evident in the lighter finishes. We recommend that a sample door be ordered and approved by customer prior to placing order. Grayish, off -color boards and wild grain patterns will be culled out. Minimum stave width of 2 inches. Doors are assembled with some consideration for grain flow and uniformity. *Available in Rustic as well.

Hickory – Hickory will have extreme variations in grain pattern as well as color. Color can vary from white to black. Extremely vivid mineral marks should be expected. These variations are evident in all stain colors. Before ordering Hickory cabinetry, a customer should be given the opportunity to view samples and/or displays that will fully demonstrate the variations in Hickory. Minimum stave width of 2 inches. Doors are assembled with some consideration for grain flow and uniformity. This result is a better -looking Hickory door. *Available in Rustic as well.

Quarter-sawn White Oak – Quarter-sawn Oak is cut from White Oak trees. The wood color varies from a white gray brown to a slightly darker green brown. In the early 20th century, this wood became a hallmark or signature of the Arts and Crafts style. Most customers appreciate this style and order corresponding cabinetry. As the name implies, quartersawn oak is produced in a certain manner which emphasize the woods medullar ray fleck and other unique grain patterns. Most stains highlight the beauty of these ray flecks and grain patterns. Medium to dark stains along with a wiping glaze can give a traditional period look. Minimum stave width of 2 inches.

Walnut – #1 Walnut – Candlelight uses #1 Walnut as our standard. Walnut is traditionally known for high-end and fine furniture work. The wood varies in color from light creamy brown to dark rich chocolate or even purplish brown. Walnut is beautiful with a natural finish and takes all stains well. Select Walnut has such a strong wood color that a customer should view stained color samples when choosing a color. Light to medium stains tends to highlight the natural wood color while dark stains tend to compliment the wood color. Walnut will contain sapwood. To tone down the sapwood use a darker stain such as Expresso. Minimum stave width of 2 inches.

New Select Walnut– Is similar to #1 Walnut with less than 3% sapwood. This is available at an increased premium.

Paint Grade – Paint Grade is selected for smooth grain patterns and very carefully dried so as to minimize shrinkage after the cabinets are finished. The customer should be aware that joints in doors may shrink causing cracks in the finish. While Paint Grade consists of mainly Maple or equal, Candlelight does use MDF for flat center panels to eliminate telegraph problems. There is a no charge wood option for when you are using all MDF or RTF doors. Additionally, the customer should be informed and willing to accept touch up of minor chips and paint defects. Although the wood is selected for smoothness, grain patterns and joints may telegraph through the finish. Due to the nature of this painted finish, it is not possible to achieve a color match on additional doors or cabinetry for any given kitchen. It is extremely important that the customer has a full understanding of the product that they are purchasing and are willing to accept the product for what it is.

*Rustic Wood Selection – For customers who enjoy the total beauty of wood with all its natural occurring defects, Candlelight offers a rustic grade in Cherry, Hickory, Maple and Red Oak. This allows for knots, split knots, ingrown bark, and other natural occurring grain patterns and mineral marks that would normally be processed out. Due to the extreme variations in material and color, Candlelight advises that a sample front be ordered, and that the customer has seen or is familiar with the wood selection of this type. For example, Cherry could show much more color variation due to allowable sapwood and heartwood. Knots will vary in size and depth; however, see-through holes will generally be less then ¼” when present. Knots and voids will NOT be filled with putty. Only door and drawer components will be rustic. Frames and other accessory parts are standard grade.
